Like a standard cycling helmet it's composed of a hard-shell plastic outer layer that disperses impact over a large area while allowing heat and moisture to disperse through spaced vent holes and a soft EVA foam inner layer which absorbs and lessens that impact. The two layers working together as part of a highly flexible comfortable and breathable pad will reinforce your leg while allowing it to move freely so that you'll barely notice you're wearing a guard. You can also cinch it round your leg snugly using two adjustable straps.
